Where I work
I am based in Modesto and I drive. Everything below is a town I can be in within about an hour — which matters, because the whole argument of this site is that a business should say, in writing, exactly where it works. Here is mine.
The towns
Home base. Downtown on 10th Street, with McHenry Avenue and the Highway 99 frontage carrying most of the trade traffic. Searches from Modesto return the most competition on the corridor, which is why a finished Google profile matters more here than anywhere else I work.
Fifteen minutes south on 99, with a main street of its own along Geer Road and a university that keeps the rental and service trades busy year round. A search from Turlock often returns Modesto companies first — which is a gap a Turlock business can close with one page.
Directly south of Modesto, close enough that most Modesto trades already drive here and few of them say so anywhere Google can read it. The town that proves the “next town over” point better than any other on the list.
East on Highway 108, where the Valley starts to climb toward the foothills. Smaller, more spread out, and served by contractors from Modesto and Riverbank who are invisible in an Oakdale search because nothing on their site mentions it.
Between Modesto and Oakdale on the Stanislaus River. A town most companies serve as an afterthought, which means the first business to write a Riverbank page usually has the search to itself.
Just north of Modesto along 99, close enough to be the same market and far enough that a “near me” search from Salida can miss a Modesto profile with the wrong service area set.
North on 99 toward Manteca, with its own downtown along Main Street. Small, tidy, and mostly served from outside — a good example of a town where one honest page beats a county-wide claim.
Where 99 meets 120, and one of the faster-growing towns on the corridor. New housing means new panels, new systems and new families searching from an address that did not exist two years ago.
The biggest market north of Modesto and a different one — more competition, more national franchises buying the top slot, more reason to be specific about which neighbourhoods and which jobs you actually want.
West of 99 on I-5, with a downtown built around a circle and a service trade that mostly drives in from Modesto and Turlock. A search from Patterson rewards whoever bothered to name it.
Southeast of Modesto, small and surrounded by orchards. Almost nobody has a Hughson page, which is exactly the point.
Between Turlock and Merced on 99, next to the old Castle air base. Served from both directions and claimed in writing by almost nobody.
The south end of the corridor I cover, with a university, a growing north side, and its own set of local trades. Far enough from Modesto that a Merced business competes with Merced businesses — and a Merced page has to say something true about Merced.
Not on the list? If it is on 99, 108, 120 or 132 and I can drive it in an hour, ask. I would rather say yes to a town than pretend I already work there.
